Personality: While most would know Kira to be quite melancholy and selfloathing, and it is certainly true, this wasn't always the case. He was almost a polar opposite. At this canon point, he's edging towards the way things are in future, but still very different. He may be about thirty percent of the way there, but otherwise, he's actually incredibly full of himself. He's cocky and confident and not afraid to show it. He not only made it into the shinigami training academy immediately while others who are considered incredibly talented failed the entrance exams several times, but he was placed in the advanced class and receives the highest marks. Whenever new skills or material is presented, he has no trouble mastering them in the first try. Izuru knows he's the privileged one in the class, and rather than being humble about the fact, he's always glad to tell his friends that he's the top of the class because of it. His family is lesser nobility, but nobility nonetheless, and his parents were both shinigami as well. It might be seen as an unfair advantage to some of the other students, but he certainly doesn't see it that way, he would say it's only natural, someone of his status is always going to be superior anyway.
That's not to say he's condescending or puts others down - not intentionally, anyway. He certainly does that without realising at times. But he isn't a cruel person by any means. He's just very proud of himself, because it's been his dream to become a shinigami, just as his family was. He wants to make them proud, though they've died, and wants to continue to help people through that talent just as they did. More than anything, he wants to be a 'good person', fight for those who can't defend themselves, make the world a better place, protect the living and the dead. He truly thinks he's doing something good and doesn't realise there's such a thing as corruption within the system, people of power who could think to harm others, or the very real possibility of being killed in the line of duty. Especially seeing others die. While yes, it's likely that's how his parents died, he didn't witness it firsthand. There's some degree of seperation nonetheless. When he sees just how easily it can happen to anyone, it starts to sink in. Despite all his best intentions and his intelligence, he's actually very naive in that sense. Nonetheless, he's still enthusiastic, and wants to prove himself in many ways.
Despite his selfimportance, when interacting with others, he's often pushed around to some degree. He tends to be a bit introverted, focused on his studies, and so, actually talking with people outside of that makes him rather more meek than usual. Especially in the case of a female classmate, Hinamori, who he seems to have a crush on. He constantly fidgets in her presence and can hardly say anything. It really all boils down to social awkwardness. He's also quite negative at times, while he may be optimistic about his future and his own skill, he's rather pessimistic in regards to most other subjects. Such as being easily annoyed, if someone's doing something wrong, it really gets on his nerves. He's mostly too polite to say something to strangers, but to a friend or some sort of rival, he wouldn't hold back at all. In fact, he often fights with Renji, especially during class sparring when they can pass it off as practice.
He hadn’t yet realised what it was all about when he decided to become a shinigami, but starting from the time when his class was attacked and he saw several students killed, his attitude and view changed. He becomes very withdrawn, negative, depressive and in his own mind, worthless. It’s really very similar to someone thinking it would be exciting to be in the army, then realising ‘the horrors of war’ once they’re sent out. Or, rather, it’s exactly the same. He thought it would be fun and exciting, and a noble cause, until he witnessed others dying and was put in real danger himself. This is the event which first set those gears in motion, though there were many more after. After Ichimaru turns traitor he realises he didn’t even know what he was fighting for, what side he was on, or which one was right. He does always fight to save others, but he doesn’t even know if he’s doing that much of the time, and so quite a bit of it is duty. For a long time he believes his only talents were following orders and being completely loyal to his captain, Ichimaru was what he believed in. He later comes to a more solid conclusion and view that works for him and is even a little more confident and has more self-worth.
Wabisuke, his sword, is often translated as ‘the penitent one’, though 侘 means ‘the beauty to be found in poverty and simplicity’ when in noun form (wabi), or ‘miserable, wretched, lonely, dreary, comfortless’ when in adjective form (wabishii) and 助 (suke) means assistance. You can take this to mean saving someone from being miserable, or assisting them in furthering it. Though, there is a knifegame that uses this, along the lines of Russian Roulette as it was said to be played by soldiers who lost the will to live. The player says ‘wabisuke’ as he uses his sword in a slicing motion across his wrist (or another possibly fatal body part?), in this context meaning ‘save me from my wretchedness’. Kira beheads his opponents after they fall from their weapon’s or their own weight, which he describes as resembling someone praying or begging forgiveness (for their sins (wretchedness)). So, even the optimistic possibility of salvation would seem to imply being freed through death. This is something that has a great effect on him, he doesn’t want to die or he would have let himself be killed, but the thought behind it, being the executioner or the one to pass judgement on someone who is on their knees, praying and awaiting death. Had his sword served any other purpose or held any other meaning, he may have gotten over his worries and fears, or at least had a healthy amount of doubt and guilt, but instead he is completely built up to be miserable and ‘wretched’. Each shinigami’s sword has a soul, and they are quite often shown speaking to their masters, Kira wouldn’t be an exception to this. His is never seen in the manga as of yet, but in the anime it spoke of wanting to kill him.
Kira has a tendency to question others’ motivations, whether they are doing what is right, if they truly understand what is happening. This is usually shown in battle, as he grows quite grim and turns the conversation to something dark. Even in a fight against a friend - he tells Matsumoto he doesn’t have to answer someone who is about to die. He looks down his nose at opponents, whether it’s a physical or conversational fight. During these times, Kira becomes assertive, intense and even ‘creepy’ in the way he speaks and carries himself. Though it seems he is questioning and mocking his opponent, it’s truly directed at himself. He wants an answer to his own motivations, he looks down on himself, and he wants someone to give him an explanation he can adopt for himself. Though he is addressing someone else, he asks the questions he himself is unsure of the correct answer to.
Because Kira is very polite and reserved, he calls people by their last names, or by a title, always. Even those who are closest to him are on a family name basis, and he doesn’t like being called by his given name either. Ichimaru is the only one who can get away with that. This is because he doesn’t feel he can be entirely open with anyone and so he doesn’t think anyone could feel close enough to him to use his given name or for him to use theirs. That is partially a symptom of anxiety/depression and partially his reserved nature. The honourific he uses can also be a great indication of how close he feels to someone, far past the usual usage. For example, before he attempts to kill her, he calls Momo ‘Hinamori-kun’, because they were classmates and he has had quite the crush on her since. However, immediately after the incident, he begins to call her ‘Hinamori-fukutaichou’. He calls himself ‘the worst’ for fighting her and carries the guilt with him forever after. She easily forgives him, but he believes she should hate him and so attempts to distance himself through formality.
Though he sees fighting so negatively and it brings him so much grief, he is still determined and won’t back down from his duty (even if he had that option). He is polite and friendly and generally genuinely concerned for others, so he can’t abandon his squad (going so far as to attempt to take charge and act as captain despite it being far outside his comfort zone and perceived ability), friends, humans or departed souls who may need his help. He wants to be reliable, courageous, someone others can look up to or call on for help, and to do the right thing, he just doesn’t believe he is good enough to be or do any of those things, but if he would take a step back and ignore his own worries, he would see that he really is; simply because he wants and tries to be.
He has quite a few friends, mostly other vice-captains, but he would much rather sit at home alone than go out with them or even visit with just one. Though he fears his own thoughts, he doesn’t feel as close to them as he should. He shows many signs of depression and/or anxiety, and it’s difficult to properly describe how he arrives at certain conclusions or a line of thought because of it, but taking disinterest in being with friends as an example, for many people with depression/anxiety, it takes too much energy, it’s just a bit outside their comfort level, or they just don’t want to even though they may know it could cheer them up to be with friends. Izuru even tries to deny himself things that may be of some comfort at times because he believes he deserves to be miserable. However, when he does go with them, he usually ends up drunk and loudly complains about anyone or anything that has bothered him recently (especially Ichimaru). Because he’s easily annoyed, but is too polite (and self-hating) to say it normally, it all comes out then.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Izuru's biggest fear at this point is dying, or rather, being killed in battle. Nevertheless he chooses to fight, but, it has certainly sunk in that death is very real. Social interaction outside of boasting or talking school is often difficult for him. He's shown to be skilled at magic-type attacks and as a swordsman, along with high intelligence and learning capability. On the other hand, he's not very adaptable, change is not something he enjoys at all.

[The pokegear is knocked to the ground, activating it, and a psyduck waddles by at top speed. From behind, Kira can be heard shouting desperately - almost whining.]
Come back here, that's not the right way! Aaah, why didn't I give him a name?! Hey...you! Just come here! Are you even listening?!
[There's a loud thud as he trips on a tree root and falls to the ground.]
This is the worst...I want to go home... I want to get back to studying instead of chasing these things around all day... Uuu...please, just send me home...
Third Person Sample:
Tradition was something Kira had been looking for quite some time for - his entire stay in Johto, in fact. Something resembling home, not quiet towns or bustling cities, something right in the middle. Somewhere like a traditional Japanese city, with people in yukata and hakama, but more importantly, the feel of traditional sensibility in the air. It was calming, especially after the high stress levels of late. Suddenly finding himself so far from anything he knew, and even so shortly after his run in with huge hollows, his brush with death. He had hardly had time to adjust to the change in point of view from that experience before landing in the middle of something else entirely. But to sit and watch Japanese dance, to have tea or admire ikebana, and take the time of peace and immersion to write haiku...suddenly everything was better. He couldn't wait to start, but, no, he couldn't let himself get too excited. Just take it one step at a time. He didn't need to go anywhere fast, he could spend a month in Ecruteak City without worrying about other responsibilities. That in itself was a bit troubling, having a clear purpose is always important, something to occupy oneself with. That was something he lacked entirely in Johto. At least, nothing of great importance. He traveled from place to place collecting badges, yes, but it seemed to serve no purpose outside selfsatisfaction. Doing something to benefit the masses would be best, much more satisfying.
Looking out across the city, he realised, to sit and enjoy himself for a while would certainly be relaxing and fun, and he would do just that. But afterwards, he had to find some way to be of use to the others in his position. Maybe it would come to him during that time of relaxation, or maybe he would have to travel further in order to be struck with inspiration, but he would definitely do it, no matter what.
